History

Lyssa is a military brat. Her father was a member of the 101st Airborne and was killed in action during the early parts of Operation Desert Storm in 1991. This tore a rift between Alyssa and her mother who turned to drinking instead of caring for the 15 year old. Truth be told, Alyssa hated the military for her fathers death. She started to skip school and ran away from home. Her mother, drunk, would beat her with one of his belts when the police would bring her back home until one day child protective services removed her from the household. She was taken to her uncle's in Chicago who was a long-served police officer in the city. Her life quietened down then until the fights at school started and she started to run away again. Sometimes she would be gone days at a time, sneaking down to Kentucky to visit friends or spend time at her fathers grave which was in Chicago. Alyssa was put on probationary terms for missing school which involved curfews and checking in every other day with her probationary officer. A few days before her 18th birthday she snuck out of her Uncle's house to go see a movie with friends where they became witnesses to a gang shooting. When it was discovered she was there, she was given the option of going to jail (something that would be on her record) or picking the military in hopes she would get the discipline she needed. Needless to say she picked the military.

Lots of people still remembered her father from when he had served. They did not offer her hands of help as far as making things easier for her, but instead offered advice trying to get the 18-year-old set on a good path. Her skills were later found to be in sharpshooting though she would never be used in her unit as such unless a worst case situation arose. At 23, the newly promoted Sergeant and her unit were deployed to Iraq. Within the first eleven months she was wounded in action and returned behind the lines to a field hospital where she learned of her mothers death. Upon returning to the states she was offered a honorable discharge which she took so she could focus on settling her mothers debts and what remained of her belongings. Her Uncle Frank, the Chicago police officer who had taken her in, managed to get her an appointment at the Police Academy if she wanted to try it out which she did. She served along side her Uncle in Chicago until at 26 the chance to try out for the NYPD SWAT team came up. She failed the test by two pull ups wearing 35lbs of gear. Her efforts did not go unrewarded though. Upon completion of the test she was offered a transfer to the NYPD, specificaly into the CSI division, with a possible promotion to a Detective Investigator upon completion of a year long probationary period. Needless to say the chance to work with another police department was an unexpected surprise but a good chance for change to make a name for herself.
